He estimated there were 150 cars on display and said there were 34 vendors in attendance, along with six food trucks. Cars came from the Bay Area as well as places closer to the event. Planes came from as far away as Oregon and Nevada, as well as Crescent City and Fresno, Curiel said. “Our guys were out there (on the tarmac), directing incoming planes,” Curiel said with a laugh, “and they asked me, ‘Where do I put ’em?'” He said there were approximately 90 to 100 aircraft in the early morning, and parking space became scarce. Pee Wee Curiel, the event’s director, was thrilled by the turnout and the enthusiasm. It looked like a very old bicycle with wheels further apart than in the modern style, but far enough apart to accommodate a motor. Nearby, though not as numerous, there were motorcycles - both modern and classic, such as a 1914 Excelsior “Autocycle” Model 7-TS. The event also hosted classic restored cars and modified models, including some with “kit” accessories, and all of them with dazzling shines. More thrillsĪirplanes may have been the feature, but they weren’t the only show in town. “We just throw a tent in the back and go,” he said.
Good explained he has had the plane approximately seven years and has taken his wife on several long-distance trips, including Wisconsin, Texas and Washington. The plane, which featured a finish so shiny a person could shave in the reflection, was one of the last of its model line built in the company’s original factory in College Park, Md., Good said. James Good, a Nevada County resident, brought his 1948 Ercoupe 415 Echo to the show. “Having three planes is handy,” he said with a chuckle, “because I can move from plane to plane and not have to change the rigs.” Finally, Boyd said, there’s a “turbine” airplane for use over rice fields.
